Strongroom’s story began when Richard Boote opened doors as a single studio in 1984. One of the few businesses around in a then no-go Shoreditch, Strongroom grew organically into all areas of the old furniture factory, transforming it and the surrounding area into the vibrant cultural destination it is today.
The guiding principles were clear: the best, most innovative technology in a vibrant and creative environment. Where other studios feared or downplayed the significance of computers, MIDI, digital audio etc, Strongroom embraced them. Richard championed emerging technologies, including the dawn of Pro Tools, founding mobile venture Stronghire, and 5.1 sound for music & video, as part of the Air Entertainment Group family with then-sister studios AIR and Air Post.
Richard’s passion for nurturing a creative atmosphere is represented visually in the work of the iconic Jamie Reid. Jamie’s ground-breaking design throughout the studios and complex following a major flood in Strongroom1 (with none other than Flood engineering!) focussed and defined Strongroom as a radical outlier and a trailblazer in an area now celebrated for its forward-thinking innovation, and it all started here.
